A woman who is about to deliver a baby has begged the Ikeja
Senior Magistrates’ Court not to send her to Kirikiri Prison in Apapa,
Lagos, southwest Nigeria.
Fasilat Yusuf, who is a
resident of Dele Faniran street, Oko Oba Agege, Lagos, failed to return
large sum money she borrowed from her neighbour, Sunday Shobowale. The
woman took a N70,000 loan in February, 2013 and was arrested seven
months later on a two-count charge of obtaining loan without paying and
stealing N70,000.
The situation with payments is worsened with
one more loan Fatisalat has to refund. But the presiding judge, Tajudeen
A. Elias, was relentless, saying that the defendant who was on trial
since last year still obliged repay one hundredth of a naira. But for
the defendant's mother in tandem with the counsel who managed Elias to
reverse his earlier remand order, the debtor could have end up in
prison.
It was gathered that a father of an unborn child sends
Fatisalat only N5,000 a month for feeding and maintenance. The council
signed a document ensuring a substantial amount repayment in the next
few days and the case was adjourned till 30 June, 2014
