10 richest musicians in Africa

Pan-African website, Afk Insider, came out with a list of Africa’s richest musicians and 6 Nigerian musicians made the list.

Ice Prince

Born in Nigeria, Panshak Zamani (aka Ice Prince), started writing rap songs and performing them at his high school. He got together with artiste M.I. to form the band, The Loopy Crew, but it wasn’t until he started releasing singles like Extraordinary or Rewind that he started getting airplay in Nigeria. His debut album, Everybody Loves Ice Prince, was very successful, and he has since won many awards, including Channel O prizes and a BET Award for Best International Act Africa in 2013. He collaborates often with Banky W, whom he calls his mentor.

Jose Chameleone

Jose (or Joe) Chameleone is a Ugandan artiste who found his niche blending traditional Ugandan folk music, a bit of rumba and a heavy reggae influence. He sings in English, Swahili and Luganda. His mansion outside of Kampala and four cars (including a Cadillac Escalade and a Benz) are evidence of his success, particularly with his hit, Valu Valu. He’s been credited with changing the face of music in Uganda, as well as making local music accessible to the rest of the world.

Banky W

Born Olubankole Wellington in the United States, Banky W moved back to Nigeria and grew up in Lagos, where he began singing at an early age. He found success early in singing competitions. Most of his wealth have come from endorsement deals with companies such as Estisalat and Samsung in Nigeria. He also started the Mr. Capable Foundation, an education charity that provides tuition scholarships for disadvantaged children.

Sarkodie

One of the leading hip hop artistes today in his home country of Ghana, Sarkodie usually raps in his native language, Twi. His style is actually called hip life — a Ghanaian hip hop creation that fuses high life, hip hop, dance hall, and reggae. He has been nominated for and won many Ghana Music Awards, and in 2012, he won the BET Award for Best International Act Africa. Heading his own clothing line, Sark by Yas and having shared the stage with American stars T-Pain, Ludacris and Trey Songz, Sarkodie is on his way. Forbes and Channel O put him at No. 8 for Africa’s most bankable artistse.

2Face Idibia

Nigerian singer-songwriter 2Face Idibia began his career as a member of the hip hop group Plantashun Boyz, but went solo in 2004 after the group split. His most popular song, African Queen, took off after being featured in the movie Phat Girlz in 2006, but all of his five albums have been very well received around the world. His wealth comes from various real estate investments across Nigeria, as well as the $80,000 he commands per show.

Fally Ipupa

Fally Ipupa, a former member of Quartier Latin International (along with Koffi Olomidé, who also made this list), went solo in 2006 and has been incredibly successful, both in his home country of the Democratic Republic of the Congo as well as internationally. With MTV Africa Music and Kora awards under his belt, he’s racked up clothing endorsement deals in Paris as well as high commissions for his shows across the world, which are almost always sold-out.

Koffi Olomide

Along with fellow Congolese star Fally Ipupa, Koffi Olomidé formed Quartier Latin as lead singer and vocalist before launching his solo career. Dubbing his style of music as tcha tcho, he considers it a blend of soukous music (dance music that originated from African rumba music). He is noted for taking on controversial subjects in his lyrics, which has led him to be widely praised and criticized worldwide. Raking in over 100,000 euros per show, Olomidé is extremely popular across Africa and the world. One of his albums is listed in Robert Dimery’s book, 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

D’banj

D’banj, born Dapo Daniel Oyebanjo (aka Koko Master), has been performing in Nigeria and around the world since 2007, and was the first African artiste who signed with the music label GOOD, owned by Kanye West. The recipient of countless awards, D’banj is known for his unique sound of dance music and Afro beats. He is involved in a variety of investments, including a nightclub in Nigeria, brands such as Glo, Koko Garri Koko and was given his own reality show, Koko Mansion.

Wizkid

In 2009, this Nigerian recording artiste’s single, Holla at your Boy, became a hit in Africa. This young superstar was signed onto Banky W’s label, Empire Mates Entertainment. Channel O and Forbes weighed him in as the fifth most bankable African musician. In 2011, he won the Hip Hop World Award for Next Rated. He has collaborated with numerous international artistes, and is also Pepsi’s highest-paid ambassador to Africa.

P-Square

P-Square is made up of identical twins, Peter and Paul Okoye, who began singing and dancing together back in their small Catholic High School in Jos, Nigeria. After forming the group in 2005, their music developed a devoted following, particularly in South Africa, and each album outsold the previous one. They were named Artistes of the Year at the 2010 Kora Awards and now bring in more than $150,000 per show. Best of all, their shared home is worth more than $3 million and has been dubbed ‘Squareville’. Talk about product placement!

Angry Fans Blast Davido, Recount their Horrible Experience at Davido's New York

Contrary to what Davido tweeted some minutes, that his concert in New York was shut down by the New York Police Department because of the too much love and support he got from fans, a lot of angry fans have taken to Twitter, Instagram to blast the singer, hurling insults at him for a messed up concert. With some thinking of demanding a refund. According to one of them, Ronke:
I guess we all should have known better. He's 21 and he went on stage high and intoxicated! Where they do that at? I'm not an artist and I understand that they do need a little extra something to perform infront of a huge crowd but dude was out of it. I thank God I never waste good money on an outfit for that bastard!
A lot more people are ranting, please manage these ones that I could munch. Guys there were ready to beat the hell out of Davido! A lady was even caught in the men's bathroom, getting f*cked! Read tweets from the very bottom to the top

PHOTOS: SEE What Dangote's Men Did To These Villagers

A Mobile Police officer, Tajudeen Sodiq, one of those deployed to the Pankere Village in Idasho community by businessman, Aliko Dangote, has provided confirmation they have the orders of the wealthy businessman to “clear” out the villagers for his refinery project, telling the displaced villagers of the nature of their instructions after chasing them out.
Some of the women who were molested by the policemen yesterday were taken to a hidden place and beaten with nail-tacked clubs.
“They said they would not shoot gun at us because it may not penetrate. So they tacked nails on woods and beat us mercilessly,” said one woman who was released by the policemen last night.

One of the injured  victims
Two other women taken away by the policemen had still not been found as at press time.
Policemen from the local station had defied Mr. Dangote’s call to carry out the “clearing” away of people, pointing out that the disputed land was in court.  However, the residents say some of the new policemen who told them they were invading at the demand of Mr. Dangote, are from the Lagos Police Command, apparently obliging the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola.

One of the bulldozers
Curiously, the residents also said they recognized some of the new “policemen” who arrived at the village today as touts from the area town. They said they were shocked to see well-known touts wearing police uniforms and entering the village to clear out any residents who may want to return to their homes. This suggests that even deeper under-handed methods are being employed by the businessman and the governor in the effort to appropriate the land.
“Presently, we are homeless and we are just squatting. We want to go back to our homes but the policemen are threatening to kill us at sight,” the homeless villagers said.
A few weeks ago, policemen fired shots into a house and injured an old man as they chased the residents out of their homes.
Governor Fashola had threatened to deal with the villagers without compensation if they resisted his quit order. Fashola and Dangote are accused of shunning court processes, refusing to wait for the suit in court over the disputed land to be disposed of.
Although Mr. Dangote claims he had paid to take over the village, the villagers, including their chiefs, said they were not contacted or paid by anyone for their land

CAN President, Oristsejafor tells why Pastors are richer than their members

President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor recently bared his mind concerning the controversies surrounding churches and their flamboyant pastors.

On why there are so many poor people in churches yet rich pastors, Oritsejafor who recently completed an ultra modern 40,000 capacity church auditorium in Warri, Delta State, said

“Remember that the pastors are pasturing both the poor and the rich. They are all in the same assembly. Both the poor and the rich, those who have the means in the church take time to be kind to their pastors. That is something most people don’t realize.

They give their pastors money, food and different things. For example, a member of the church goes to his pastor and says, ‘I feel led to give you a car. Take this car.’ Now the pastor has a car. Did he steal it? As I sit here talking to you now, I can tell you that I am training almost 100 people in institutions of higher learning. Nobody is going to broadcast that.

On every 26th of December, I organize what I call poverty alleviation. I have been doing it now for about eight years.”

When asked to explain why churches milk the poor, the CAN president and Senior pastor of Word of Life Bible Church, said:

"People don’t understand what they say about the church milking the poor. Can a poor man have money to pay tithe? A man who has no job, can he pay tithe? No, he won’t be able to pay. So how do you milk a man who has no milk? In a church, you have both the poor and the rich. It is generally not the poor that finance the church.

It is those with the means. A man, for example, who earns N10,000, how much is his tithe? His tithe is N1,000. A man who earns N500,000, how much is his tithe? His tithe is 10 per cent which is N50,000. How much would you milk from a man who pays a tithe of N1000?

“We won’t say things like this usually because the church is a level-playing ground. Whether you are poor or you are rich, God sees everybody as equal. It is because of a question like this that sometimes, we have to take time to analyse things.

I even hear people say that the poor give money to start schools, but their children cannot go to the schools. How will they give this money when they are poor? The truth is that, the people who actually give this money are those who have the means to do so. Those people make it possible for churches to start schools. Now again, why do churches charge high fees in school? You didn’t ask me that, but I’m just throwing that in free. People must understand that there is a standard." he told Punch
