Some officers attached to the Imo State Police Command on
Monday caused the unconsciousness of an asthmatic patient and a six-
year- old boy at the popular Eke Onuwa market located along Douglas
road, Owerri, the state capital.
According to Leadership, the policemen who were attached to the
task force on street trading and illegal motor park went on rampage
while clamping down on offenders, reportedly shot several teargas
canister into the air amidst crowd.
The victim whose name was
given as Chukwukere Daniel, and the six- year- old boy whose name could
not be confirmed, were said to be among the crowd who gathered to watch
promotional display by a beverage company inside the market, but were
mistakenly caught in the dangerous air.
It was gathered that the
protest that followed the incident caused a stampede, with several
people injured while scampering for safety. Some hoodlums were said to
have used the opportunity to loot goods from traders who fled and
abandoned their shops.
The victim, Daniel who narrated his
ordeal after regaining consciousness said: “I was returning from work
and heard a loud sound at Douglas road. I started running but slumped
later as I was told by people who revived me”
Daniel further
revealed that the good Samaritans, who saved his life, were quick enough
to purchase inhaler for him as he had misplaced his own during the
stampede.
